EWA/IDEXX Webinar: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) & the UWWTD Recast: Urban Wastewater Surveillance in Practice
The recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) strengthens the link between wastewater management and public health under a One Health approach. It recognizes wastewater as a key source and indicator of antimicrobial agents and antimicrobial resistance.
A cornerstone is Article 17, which requires Member States to establish national coordination between public health and wastewater authorities to define what to monitor, where and how often to sample, and how to communicate results to support timely public health action.
The Directive also introduces AMR monitoring in urban wastewater (For agglomerations of 100 000 p.e. and above), supported by forthcoming EU-level provisions on minimum sampling frequency and harmonised methodology.
In this webinar, our speakers Claudia Topalli (IDEXX) and Bernd Gawlik (European Commission – Joint Research Centre) will explore what the new requirements mean for utilities, laboratories, and authorities. They will cover surveillance design, data quality, implementation pathways, and future opportunities.
