8th Brussels Conference

28.06.2012

The European Year of Water – Upcoming Chal-lenges – is the theme of this year’s Brussels Conference. Climate adaptation, water quality and quantity, and the water/energy nexus will be among the hot topics addressed at the 8th EWA Brussels Conference. The annual conference brings together high profile experts, decision makers and stakeholders from the European water sector and European institutions to discuss Europe’s pressing water issues.

Held in cooperation with the DG Environment of the European Commission, the annual Conference attracts water professionals from all over Europe. The main objective of the Conference is to establish a dialogue between the European Commission and European water professionals. In between the sessions, the participants have plenty of time to engage in a conversation with representatives from the Commission and other European Institutions.

Topics and speakers

The main three fields that are being addressed during the conference are water quality, water quantity and the water/energy nexus. These are stress areas which have been acknowledged by the blueprint rapporteur MEP Dr. Richard Seeber. The Con-ference addresses these topics in four sessions with presenta-tions on Climate Adaptation – water scenarios and sectorial aspects, Needs and Challenges for Water Reuse in Europe, Water as an irreplaceable Part of Agricultural Production, Micropollutants, Compatibility of Hydropower with the Water Framework Directive, Energy Recovery Strategies in the Urban Water Cycle, Research and Innovation in the European Water Sector, and Challenges of Financing Water Infrastructure in Southeast Europe. Speakers of the conference will contribute to the debate with an academic, institutional and commercial background. Mr. Peter Gammeltoft, Head of the Water Unit at DG Environment, will open the Conference with a key note speech on First Results of the Blueprint Process.
